The map shown here displays data, gathered by the Gulf Restoration Network, on permits for development proposals in Louisiana issued by eiether the state's Office of Coastal Management under the Coastal Zone Management Act or the United States Army Corps of Engineers under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. Section 404 of the CWA establishes a program to regulate the discharge of dredged or fill materials into waters of the United States, including wetlands. Activities in waters of the United States regulated under this program include fill for development, water resource projects (such as dams and levees), infrastructure development (such as highways and airports) and mining projects - permits issued by the state's OCM under the Coastal Zone Management Act share similar qualifications for permit applications, but because of their location fall under a different permit.
